July Wrap-Up & August TBR

Well, this wrap-up is going to be a bit of an embarrassing one, to be honest. Turns out, moving to London actually makes your life pretty busy. Who knew? Although, looking back at my TBR, I didn’t do as badly as I thought I had, but I still definitely didn’t read as much as I thought I would this month.

I’m reviewing A Christmas Carol: to begin with. Which is to say, welcome to my first book review of 2020! I’m keeping the Christmas spirit alive just a tiny bit longer, with a review of Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. I’ve seen some of the adaptations that have been made over the years, but this was my first time actually reading it.

It’s not often that I read nonfiction books, let alone review them — in fact, this might be my first non-fiction review, so please bare with me if it’s not quite what you’re used to reading from me. This is a review of Olivia Laing’s upcoming essay collection Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency. It is published by Pan Macmillan, and is due to be released on April 16th. I’ve long been meaning to learn a bit more about art, so when I saw this on NetGalley, I decided it was time to start learning.

I came across The Strange Adventures of H by Sarah Burton on NetGalley, and the first thing that stood out to me was the cover — it’s gorgeous! My black and white kindle really doesn’t do it justice. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, so I looked at the description, and was intrigued. I enjoy a good historical fiction, so based on the description, I decided to give it a go. I would warn that this book deals with sexual assault, as well as prostitution, and it is very much an adult book. With the story of how I came to this book aside, let’s get right into my thoughts.
