It’s that time of year again! Half the year down, so it’s time for the Mid-Year Reading Check-In Tag! This tag is commonly known under a different name (I’m sure you’re familiar with it), but I’ve seen a few people talking about how the term used in the common name is offensive to the neurodivergent community, so I’ve retitled the tag with a name that I hope both accurately reflects its content, and is non-offensive to all marginalised groups. I did this tag last year on my blog, so I’m saying I tagged myself, as I’ve not seen many people participating in it so far this year! Maybe everyone’s posts are still on the way. Anyway, here we go!
How much have you read?
I’ve read 34 books, plus whatever I read since writing this on Sunday! Maybe I’ve read 35 now!
What have you been reading?
I’ve been reading more non-fiction this year. I’ve also been reading more science fiction, and as ever, a lot of contemporary/litfic! I’ve read less historical fiction this year.
Best book you’ve read so far in 2021
The White Book by Han Kang!
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021
I’ve not read any!
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb.
Most anticipated release for the second part of the year
I don’t know of any! I’m not good at keeping up with upcoming releases.
Biggest disappointment
Strange Hotel by Eimear McBride.
Biggest surprise
Republic by Plato… I didn’t hate it!
New favourite author (debut or new to you).
Noaise Dolan, who wrote Exciting Times!
Underrated gems you’ve discovered recently
Frenchman’s Creek which is overshadowed by du Maurier’s more famous novels!
Rereads this year
Only Rebecca! I’ve not been rereading because there’s too much on my TBR!
Newest fictional crush
I don’t get fictional crushes!
Newest favourite character
Elinor from Sense and Sensibility!
Book that made you cry
None yet! I’m not a big crier, so it takes a lot to make me cry while I’m reading.
Book that made you happy
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, because it was just pretty wholesome!
Favourite book to film adaptation
I actually can’t think of any I’ve seen this year!
Most beautiful cover you’ve bought (or received) this year
Good question! I love the cover for The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
So many! I really want to read more by Toni Morrison, perhaps The Bluest Eye will be the next book I read by her?
Favourite post you have done this year?
Ooh, love this! So far, it’s my post about Readerly.
Favourite book community member:
Can’t choose! Here’s a few of my friends, who are also the people I’m tagging to do this on their blogs!
honestly, my tbr has been massive this year! i’m surprised when i see people constantly rereading! (i’ve only done 1, and it feels like too much)

Klara and the sun is on my tbr, I’m a little hesitant bc I don’t read that genre but it looks worth the read
