Patient X: The Case Book of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa | 11 | 2020 Countdown

Welcome to Day 14 of my 2020 Book Spotlight Countdown! For more information about this series, please read my introductory post here. Today, I’m celebrating Patient X: The Case Book of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa by David Peace!

11th of 2020

A series of vignettes following the life of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, Patient X is an extremely unique novel. Told in fragmented pieces, the renowned authors life starts to fall into place. Through Peace’s research and work, the reader is introduced to the great author. Many aspects of Akutagawa’s life and experiences are drawn into this text, creating a fascinating disjointed narrative that acts as a 300-page long character study.

Warning for discussion of suicide in this text.

If you’re interested in Japanese culture, give this a go. I was particularly reminded of the film Mishima reading this book.
